Selamat belajar.

Jawaban untuk soal hujan Meteor Perseid.

Diketahui hujan Meteor Perseid berlangsung kira-kira selama 3 hari.

Kita asumsikan orbit Bumi mengelilingi Matahari berbentuk lingkaran sempurna.

Dalam 1 hari, Bumi menempuh
=(1/365,25) x keliling orbit Bumi mengelilingi Matahari

=(1/365,25) x 2Ï€r
r : jarak Bumi-Matahari rata-rata (= 1 AU)

= (1/365,25) x 2Ï€(149,6.10^6km)

= 2 573 483 km

Dalam 3 hari, Bumi menempuh
= 3 x 2 573 483 km = 7 720 449 km

Celestial Mechanics: The Waltz of the Planets

Celestial Mechanics: The Waltz of the Planets (Springer Praxis Books / Popular Astronomy)
Springer | ISBN 038730777X | 2007-01 | PDF | 262 pages | 11.8 MB

The common perception of Celestial Mechanics is that of a discipline which needs advanced mathematics and astronomy to be understood. Yet modern Celestial Mechanics has a rather different taste and a truly interdisciplinary nature. The number of celestial objects known to mankind has dramatically increased, the long-awaited presence of extrasolar planets has been eventually detected around other stars, spaceflight dynamics has brought new applications encompassing rocked dynamics, the place-in-orbit of artificial satellites and interplanetary mission design. Solar System exploration has grown as a long term strategy for the construction of a permanent base on the Moon and a manned mission to Mars.

The aim of the book is to show to the people at large, as well as to a more skilled audience, the many fascinating aspects of modern celestial mechanics. After giving to the reader the necessary technical tools needed for a basic understanding of the underlying physical phenomena (using only elementary mathematics), facts and figures are provided on historical events, modern discoveries and future applications. Contents are divided into major topics where the three "souls" of modern celestial mechanics (dynamical systems, Solar System & stellar systems, spaceflight dynamics) play a major role. As an example, spin-orbit resonances can be explained using fractional algebra and subsequently described in action as "cosmic spinning tops". Easily observable effects such as the existence of a "dark side of the Moon" (and of many other satellites) can be compared to the "complete synchronous rotation" achieved by a geostationary telecommunication satellite in order to be always in view of the receiving parabolas on the ground. On longer time scales, the consequences of spin-orbit interaction may dramatically change the evolution of a planet when chaos enters the scene and must be taken into account in searching habitable planets around other stars.

Gerhana Bulan 16-17 Agustus 2008

Harap maklum.)

Selamat mengamati.

Astronomy Demystified

Bad Astronomy : Misconceptions and Misuses Revealed, from Astrology to the Moon Landing "Hoax"

Review:
Astronomer Phil Plait has found a great niche for himself - debunking bad science, specifically Bad Astronomy. He's been at it on the web for years, and it came as no surprise to me when I found out there was a book deal in the works.

Bad Astronomy: Misconceptions and Misuses Revealed, from Astrology to the Moon Landing "Hoax" is exactly what it sounds like. For 260ish pages Phil takes a look at many of the common misconceptions that have plagued astronomy for years.

The first half of the book is interesting reading, but it's more of a science book. Phil looks at many of the commonly misunderstood concepts in astronomy and sets the record straight. I'd like to think I know a little about astronomy, so I was pretty surprised to learn I was misinformed about many aspects of the basics: tides, meteors, gravity.

It's in the second half of the book where Plait really hits his stride as he examines some of the "bad astronomy" hatched more recently: Apollo moon landing hoaxes, UFOs etc. Because the culprits are still spinning out the bad science, Phil firmly debunks their "theories". I especially enjoyed the Top Ten Examples of Bad Astronomy in Hollywood.

If I had a complaint, it's that Phil spends a little too much time explaining how to balance an egg in any season (a whole chapter!, but I guess he was trying to make a point). Seriously, though, it's a great book, not Bad Astronomy at all.

2008 Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks on August 12

Review 1
The Perseids are coming! The Perseids are coming! I'm sure you're already hearing the cry around the world… But what will be the best place to watch and when will be the best date to see the most "shooting stars"? Follow along and let's find out…

The Perseid meteor shower has a wonderful and somewhat grisly history. Often referred to as the "Tears of St. Lawrence" this annual shower coincidentally occurs roughly about the same date as the saint's death is commemorated on August 10. While scientifically we know the appearance of the shooting stars are the by-products of comet Swift-Tuttle, our somewhat more superstitious ancestors viewed them as the tears of a martyred man who was burned for his beliefs. Who couldn't appreciate a fellow who had the candor to quip "I am already roasted on one side and, if thou wouldst have me well-cooked, it is time to turn me on the other." while being roasted alive? If nothing else but save for that very quote, I'll tip a wave to St. Lawrence at the sight of a Perseid!

While the fall rate - the number of meteors seen per hour - of the Perseids has declined in recent years since Swift-Tuttle's 1992 return, the time to begin your Perseid watch is now. While the peak of activity will not occur until August 12 at approximately 11:00 GMT, this will leave many observers in daylight. For those who wish only to observe during the predicted maximum rate, the place to be is western North America and the time is around 4:00 a.m. However, let's assume that not all of us can be in that place and be up at that time… So let's take a more practical look at observing the Perseid Meteor Shower.

For about the last week or so, I've noticed random activity has picked up sharply and traceable Perseid activity begins about midnight no matter where you live. Because we are also contending with a Moon which will interfere with fainter meteors, the later you can wait to observe, the better. The general direction to face will be east around midnight and the activity will move overhead as the night continues. While waiting for midnight or later to begin isn't a pleasant prospect, by then the Moon has gone far west and we are looking more nearly face-on into the direction of the Earth's motion as it orbits the Sun, and the radiant - the constellation of the meteor shower origin - is also showing well. For those of you who prefer not to stay up late? Try getting up early instead!

How many can you expect to see? A very average and cautiously stated fall rate for this year's Perseids would be about 30 per hour, but remember - this is a collective estimate. It doesn't mean that you'll see one every two minutes, but rather you may see four or five in quick succession with a long period of inactivity in between. You can make your observing sessions far more pleasant by planning for inactive times in advance. Bring a radio along, a thermos of your favorite beverage, and a comfortable place to observe from. The further you can get away from city lights, the better your chances will be.

Will this 2000 year-old meteor shower be a sparkling success or a total dud? You'll never know unless you go out and try yourself. I've enjoyed clear skies here for the last week and without even trying caught at least 15 per hour each night I've gone out. One thing we do know is the Perseids are one of the most predictable of all meteor showers and even an hour or so of watching should bring a happy reward!

Wishing you clear skies and good luck…
(cited from Universe Today : Meteor Showers )

Review 2:
In mid-August each year the Earth is bombarded by thousands of tons of extra-terrestrial debris; the remnants of Comet Swift-Tuttle. But Valdostans need not worry; as these tiny dust particles burn up in the Earth's atmosphere as meteors. This week brings the Perseids, traditionally the finest of the annual meteor showers!

The Perseid meteor shower lasts from August 10th to 13th, peaking after midnight on Wednesday, August 11th. The meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, which rises late in the evening in the northeast. Observers need be able to identify Perseus to enjoy this event, however! The Perseid meteors are noted for their long trails and should streak across much of the night sky. One only needs to look towards the northeast after dusk, anywhere from 30 degrees to 80 degrees above the horizon. The best time to observe the Perseids will be after 1:00 am during the morning of August 11th. The morning sky currently features the bright planet Venus, which rises at 2:36 am and is located directly north of the familiar constellation Orion. One can expect to see nearly (but not quite!) as many meteors in the evening sky, before midnight.

The best place to observe the Perseid meteors is in an open area (a field, a golf course, etc.) that is unobstructed by trees or other structures, and which is far from city lights. The darker the sky the better! Because meteors are not amenable to telescopic observation, and because Nevins Hall is currently undergoing renovation, the VSU Observatory will not be open for this event.

One last bit of astronomical nomenclature! The tiny fragments of rock and dust which have evaporated off the nucleus of Comet Swift-Tuttle (last seen in 1862), and which continue to orbit the Sun, are known as meteoroids. Those that encounter the Earth each August enter the atmosphere at high speed (typically 10-30 miles per second) and burn up as a result of air friction. These are the meteors we see in the night sky! Should any fragments survive the fall to Earth the impacting objects will become meteorites; this is however extremely unlikely!
(cited from Perseid Meteor Shower)

Bahan Diskusi:

Selamat berpikir.

Starry Night Pro Plus 6.0.6

Review :

For many, astronomy is more than just a matter of popping out and taking a peek at the stars - it's a serious hobby, and the Starry Night range is simply the best software we've seen to support that legion of amateur astronomers. The "Pro" heading here is a little exaggerated - Starry Night: Enthusiast is for amateurs with telescopes who do astronomy regularly, but not too heavily. The Pro and this, the Pro Plus editions, are for amateurs for whom it's a serious hobby that takes up a fair amount of their spare time.

It's much more than a planetarium, though as we'll come back to, it's still a great way to find out what's what in the night sky. There's a 192 page book (the Starry Night Companion) which isn't great, but you can't complain as it's effectively free. There's SkyTheater, a DVD of mini-features covering around 2/3 of the excellent Atlas of the Sky DVD, and there's Starry Night itself. The stunning planetarium has much more information than the even the Pro version - showing an incredible 55 million stars (500+ million online) and a million galaxies. there's the excellent Sky Calendar that details all the upcoming notable events you will be able to see, and around 100 superb interactive explorations (30 more than Enthusiast). Oh and there's a neat astronomical dictionary, plus a "fly around" spaceship feature like Deep Space Explorer. Like the Pro edition, Pro Plus also has an Ephemeris generator, providing location data for any object over a specific time span, and 180 degree, full sky charts.

The special features you get by going for Pro Plus rather than Pro are themselves very attractive. Perhaps the most impressive visual aspect is its full colour photograph of the entire night sky, to a limiting magnitude of 14-15. This is a mosaic of around 20,000 images taken with a 6 megapixel camera, and does give a stunning representation of the star field. There's also a useful addition if you have the MaxIm DL imaging software. Pictures taken through your telescope and processed with MaxIM DL can then be integrated into Starry Night to form part of the visual support in the program. This is for Windows users only, but Mac users get their own unique feature with a "telescope handbox simulator" that allows you to move your linked telescope to any position. There's better telescope linking too in the telescope control window - and some rather elegant horizon photo-realistic horizon panoramas. Oh, and along with the newer versions of the lower editions of the software as they are released, there's joystick control when you are moving around the sky in spaceship mode.

Despite all the bells and whistles, Starry Night remains at its heart an excellent planetarium program that brings up on your PC or Mac a view of the night sky that is simply brilliant. It's a clear, crisp, image, the controls are mostly intuitive and some of the extras are a delight. Constellations can be brought up in stick form, or (for the major ones) with a very effective graphic image. The program shows you the view from home (or anywhere else), and monitors real time to show you the view now (but of course you can move to another date and time at will). Pro Plus can cope with an amazing range of dates from 99,999 BC to 99,999 AD. The secondary features are good too. You can find something in space, print of excellent star charts to take outside and more.

Perhaps most impressive, if you have an appropriate hi-tech telescope is that the Pro and Pro Plus versions of the software can control your telescope, pointing it at the object of your choice. You need a serial port and RS232 cable, and not every telescope is supported (there's a list at the end of the review of those supported in early 2005, but check the Starry Night website www.starrynight.com for the latest support list.

Gerhana Matahari 1 Agustus 2008

On August 1, a total solar eclipse was visible in parts of Canada, northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia, and China. The eclipse swept across Earth in a narrow path that begins in Canada's northern territory of Nunavut and ends in northern China's Silk Road region at sunset.

An eclipse of the sun occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun. When the moon's shadow falls on Earth, people within that shadow see the moon block a portion of the sun's light.

The moon's shadow has two parts, an umbra and a penumbra. The umbra is the "inner" part of the moon's shadow. The penumbra is the moon's faint "outer" shadow.

Tanggal 1 Agustus 2008 kemarin, terjadi Gerhana Matahari Total.

Selamat mengamati gerhana.
